What is Answer Engine Optimization (AEO)? Definition and examples
Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) explained: what answer engines do with your page, how it differs from SEO, and how to measure it.
What does an answer engine actually do with your page?
An answer engine reads your page, pulls out the passages that answer a question, and writes a reply, with or without a link back to you. That is the whole shift. A classic search engine ranks your URL. An answer engine ranks your sentences.
Google has described how this works for its own features. Its AI optimization guide says AI Overviews and AI Mode use retrieval-augmented generation and "query fan-out" over indexed pages (Google Search Central, AI optimization guide, updated 10 July 2026). In plain terms, the system splits a question into sub-questions, fetches indexed pages for each, and writes one answer from the best passages.
Three things follow from that.
- If your page is not indexed, it cannot be retrieved. See RAG and query fan-out.
- If the answer sits in paragraph nine, a competitor's clearer passage wins.
- If your claim carries no evidence, the engine has less reason to attribute it to you.
How is AEO different from traditional SEO?
AEO is a part of SEO, not a replacement for it. Google says so in its own words. Its guide states that "optimizing for generative AI search is optimizing for the search experience, and thus still SEO" (Google Search Central, AI optimization guide, updated 10 July 2026).
The difference is the unit that competes and the outcome you are optimising for.
| Traditional SEO | AEO | |
|---|---|---|
| Unit that competes | The URL | The passage |
| Winning outcome | A ranked blue link | A quoted, attributed answer |
| Signal of success | Positions and clicks | AI impressions, citations, branded demand |
| Core inputs | Crawlability, relevance, links, E-E-A-T | The same, plus question-led structure and first-sentence answers |
AEO and Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) are often used interchangeably. We treat GEO as the wider practice across chat assistants, and AEO as the answer-extraction layer inside it. Read our GEO definition, or see AEO and GEO in the glossary. Our AI search optimization service covers both.
Which answer engines matter in 2026, and how many people use them?
Google's AI surfaces report the largest audience, ChatGPT is the biggest standalone assistant by published weekly users, and Perplexity is far smaller. The published figures:
- Google AI Overviews has over 2.5 billion monthly active users. AI Mode reached 1 billion monthly active users within a year of launch. The Gemini app has over 900 million monthly active users (Sundar Pichai, Google I/O 2026 keynote, 19 May 2026).
- ChatGPT has 900 million weekly active users and 50 million paying subscribers, up from 800 million weekly users in October 2025 (TechCrunch, 27 February 2026).
- Perplexity handled 780 million queries in May 2025, about 30 million a day, growing more than 20% month over month, according to its CEO (TechCrunch, 5 June 2025). No verified 2026 figure has been published, so we do not extrapolate.
The units differ, so the figures are not directly comparable. The practical reading is simple. For an Indian brand, AI Overviews and AI Mode sit on top of the Google results your customers already use. ChatGPT is a second front. Perplexity is a third.
What happens to clicks when an AI answer appears?
Fewer people click through to any website when an AI summary appears, and almost nobody clicks the links inside the summary. Pew Research Center tracked 900 US adults across 68,879 searches in March 2025. When an AI summary appeared, users clicked a traditional result in 8% of visits, against 15% without one. They clicked a link inside the summary in 1% of such visits. They ended their browsing session on 26% of pages with a summary, against 16% without. In that study, 18% of searches produced an AI summary (Pew Research Center, 22 July 2025).
The top-ranking page feels it most. Ahrefs found that the presence of an AI Overview correlates with a 58% lower average click-through rate for the number-one ranking page, based on 300,000 keywords and Search Console data comparing December 2023 with December 2025. That is up from 34.5% in its April 2025 study (Ahrefs, 4 February 2026; Ahrefs, 17 April 2025).
Two caveats apply. The click data is US-only. And fewer clicks is not the same as less business. Adobe Digital Insights, analysing more than 1 trillion visits to US retail sites, found that AI-referred visitors converted 54% better, spent 53% more time on site and viewed 23% more pages. AI-referred traffic to those sites grew 138% year over year in May 2026 (Digital Commerce 360, 17 June 2026). That is retail, and it is US data, but the direction is clear. The visitor who does click tends to be further along.
This is what zero-click search means in 2026. The answer is consumed on the results page. Your job is to be the source of that answer, and to make sure your brand name travels even when the click does not.
What does an AEO-ready page look like?
An AEO-ready page asks a real question in the heading, answers it in the first sentence, and backs the answer with evidence and a named author. The working checklist:
- One question per heading. Write each H2 as the query someone types.
- Answer in the first 40 to 60 words. Add the detail after.
- Keep sentences short, one idea each. A short sentence is easier to quote whole.
- Cite primary sources inline, with dates. Engines and readers both need to check you.
- Show who wrote it. Google's helpful-content guidance asks whether it is "self-evident to your visitors who authored your content", and states that within E-E-A-T "trust is most important" (Google Search Central, creating helpful content, updated 10 December 2025).
- Make it crawlable. Retrieval cannot reach a page that is blocked or noindexed. See AI crawlers.
- Use real tables and lists. A comparison table is quotable. A wall of text is not.
You are reading a page built this way. Check your own site against our audit checklist.
Do schema markup or special AI files help you get cited?
No, not for Google's AI features, and Google says so plainly. Its documentation on AI features states "There are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, nor other special optimizations necessary". It adds that there is "no special schema.org structured data that you need to add" and that "You don't need to create new machine readable files, AI text files, or markup to appear in these features" (Google Search Central, AI features and your website, updated 10 December 2025).
Google's AI optimization guide goes further. It lists tactics that "don't affect Google Search visibility", including LLMS.txt and other AI-specific files, chunking content into tiny pieces, rewriting for AI, seeking inauthentic mentions, and over-focusing on structured data (Google Search Central, AI optimization guide, updated 10 July 2026).
That does not make structured data useless in classic search. It is just not a ticket into AI answers.
On llms.txt: we keep one at /llms.txt because it costs nothing. We do not sell it as a tactic, and our llms.txt post explains why. Be wary of any agency that lists it as a paid deliverable.
How do you measure whether AEO is working?
You measure impressions in AI surfaces, citations in assistant answers, and branded demand, because clicks alone undercount it. Google Search Console now includes a Generative AI performance report. It shows impressions only, not clicks, for AI Overviews and AI Mode, split by page, country, date and device. It rolled out to all sites worldwide by 31 August 2026, and a property-level "search generative AI control" lets a site opt out of those surfaces (Google Search Console Help; Search Engine Journal, 31 August 2026).
We know of no equivalent report for ChatGPT, Perplexity or Claude. You have to ask them. Run a fixed set of buyer questions each month, record which brands and URLs get cited, and track the change. We show the method in how to check if ChatGPT recommends your brand. See AI citation for what counts.
Then tie it to money. Watch branded search volume, direct traffic, and conversions from AI referrers in your analytics. If those move while AI impressions rise, AEO is working.
Is AEO worth it for an Indian D2C brand or a 20-person SaaS?
Yes, if you already publish pages that answer buyer questions, and no, if basic SEO is still broken. AEO adds nothing to a site Google cannot crawl or that says nothing specific. Fix that first with plain SEO services, then layer AEO on top.
For a D2C brand, the quotable pages are comparisons, ingredient and material questions, sizing, delivery and returns. For a small SaaS, they are "best tool for" pages, integration questions, pricing pages that state actual numbers, and migration guides. Each is a question with a direct answer an engine can quote.
Be honest about scale. The user figures above are global and the click studies are US-only. India-specific data at that level does not exist yet, and we will not invent it.
WoofRank was founded in August 2026 and has no clients yet. We publish our own numbers at /client-zero/ so you can watch the method work, or fail, on our own site. Start with the free visibility check. The SNIFF audit at Rs 15,000 (USD 300) is the paid, one-time version. Google itself says no one can guarantee a number-one ranking (Google Search Central, Do you need an SEO?), and no one can guarantee a citation either.
What are the quick answers to common AEO questions?
What is Answer Engine Optimization in one sentence? AEO is structuring content so AI answer engines can extract, quote and attribute it directly.
Is AEO different from SEO? AEO is part of SEO, with the passage rather than the URL as the unit that competes.
Do I need schema or llms.txt to appear in AI Overviews? No. Google states that no special structured data or AI files are required.
How do I measure AEO? Track AI impressions in Search Console, citations in assistant answers, and branded demand.

FAQ
Questions about this topic
What is Answer Engine Optimization (AEO)?
Answer Engine Optimization is the practice of structuring content so answer engines such as Google AI Overviews, AI Mode, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Claude can extract, quote and attribute it directly. It builds on SEO fundamentals: crawlable pages, one question per heading, a direct first-sentence answer, and cited evidence with a named author.
What is the difference between AEO and SEO?
AEO is a part of SEO, not a replacement. Google's AI optimization guide states that optimising for generative AI search is still SEO. The difference is the unit that competes: SEO ranks a URL in a list, while AEO gets a passage quoted and attributed inside a composed answer, measured by AI impressions and citations.
Do I need schema markup or an llms.txt file to appear in AI Overviews?
No. Google's documentation says there are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, no special structured data to add, and no need for new AI text files or markup. Schema still earns rich results in classic search. We keep an llms.txt because it costs nothing, but we do not sell it as a tactic.
How do you measure whether AEO is working?
Track three things: impressions in Google Search Console's Generative AI performance report, which shows AI Overviews and AI Mode impressions by page, country, date and device; citations of your brand and URLs in a fixed monthly set of ChatGPT, Perplexity and Claude questions; and branded search, direct traffic and conversions from AI referrers.
Is AEO worth it for a small Indian D2C brand or SaaS?
Yes, if you already publish pages that answer buyer questions, such as comparisons, pricing, sizing, integrations and migration guides. No, if basic SEO is still broken, because answer engines cannot retrieve pages Google cannot crawl. Fix crawlability and specificity first, then layer question-led structure and cited evidence on top.
